The confusing world of Ebooks

Yep, trying to get an Ebook produced is enough to make anyone's head spin. There are lots of different Ebook formats and online retailers have different requirements on how they accept Ebooks for publication. The long and the short of it is, there are two major Ebook formats: Mobi for Kindle Devices and Epub for everything else.

What makes up an Ebook?

There are three elements to an Ebook, let's call them the source files:

1. The Cover (png, gif, jpeg formats)
2. The body file containing the text (word, pdf, text formats)
3. Images (if any, in png, gif or jpeg format)

How are Ebooks produced?

First, you need to have the source files.

If you've had a book previously published in print then your publisher should be able to give you the source files if you don't have them already. If you only have the printed version of the book that you want to convert into Ebook format, then you will need a scanning service to scan your book and save it as a cover file, body file and images . I don't provide a scanning service but google"scan ebook services" for those companies that do.

The source files are converted using software to produce the final Ebook in various formats.

How are Ebooks sold?

1. Via your own website
2. Via an online retailer

How do I get my Ebook into Amazon.com or Apple's ibookstore?

You could try to do it yourself or you could engage an Aggregator. An Aggregator makes sure your Ebooks are in the correct format for all the online retailers.
